RAINBOW CITY– All three shifts of the Rainbow City Fire Department completed quarterly emergency medical services training this week.
The program focused on updated treatment methods and department rules. According to the department, ongoing training helps crews provide strong emergency care throughout the community.
Fully Involved Medical Direction & Training led the program. In addition, Medical Director Dr. Joshua Williams provided leadership and guidance during the training.
Training Focuses on Cardiac Care
Firefighters reviewed cardiac patient assessments and electrocardiogram interpretation. During the program, crews also studied how to recognize and treat ST-elevation myocardial infarction, commonly known as STEMI.
Another part of the training covered atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular response. Specifically, crews reviewed the use of labetalol for treating the condition.
The lesson also included patient selection and reasons not to use the medication. Additionally, instructors discussed other factors that crews should consider before treatment.
Department Adds New Protocols and Medication
The department introduced the proximal humerus as its new standard site for intraosseous access. Crews may use the procedure during an adult cardiac arrest when IO access is needed.
This method allows emergency medical crews to reach the patient’s bloodstream through the upper arm bone.
Meanwhile, the department added ceftriaxone, also known as Rocephin, to its advanced life support medication supply. Training covered when crews should use the medication and how to give it.
Rainbow City Fire Department officials said continued education remains an important part of emergency medical care. Therefore, the department plans to keep its crews current on treatment methods and medical rules.
Officials also praised every member who continues to train and improve for the community.
