Ashley’s big night not enough for Sand Rock against Ider

SAND ROCK – Sand Rock senior quarterback Alec Ashley accounted for almost 300 total yards of offense, but the Ider Hornets came away with a 56-35 Class 2A, Region 8 football win on Friday.

Ashley completed 17-of-24 pass attempts for 232 yards and four touchdowns for the Wildcats (1-1, 0-1). He also ran for 60 yards on 16 carries.

Ashley put the Wildcats in front 7-0 on a 23-yard touchdown pass to Bailey Martin in the first quarter, but Ider (3-0, 1-0) countered with a pair of scores to take a 14-7 advantage after one.

An Ashley-to-Woodall 25-yard connection tied the game at 14 in the second quarter, but the Hornets regained the lead at 20-14 with a 13-yard touchdown run. The try for two failed.

Sand Rock regained the lead at 21-20 on Ashley’s third touchdown pass later in the second quarter, but Ider took a 28-21 advantage at halftime on a 2-yard touchdown run.

The Hornets began to pull away in the third quarter with a 52-yard touchdown run to make the score 34-21. Sand Rock tried to keep pace on Lucas Brown’s 4-yard score later in the quarter, but a Connor Ellis 19-yard touchdown run gave the Hornets a 40-28 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

Another Ashley-to-Woodall touchdown connection from 22 yards early in the fourth made the score 40-35, but Ider sealed the win with a pair of touchdown runs for the final.

Woodall was the Wildcats’ top receiver with eight catches for 99 yards and two scores.
