Cherokee Rock Village Expands Accessibility with New Inclusive Playground Features
Leesburg, Ala. — High atop Lookout Mountain, where the wind carries the scent of pine and the view stretches across Weiss Lake, Cherokee Rock Village continues to grow—not just in popularity, but in heart.
This week, the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting to celebrate new handicapped-accessible additions to the park’s playground. The event marked another step in making one of North Alabama’s most scenic treasures a destination everyone can enjoy.
Chamber Executive Director Joy Perry welcomed guests gathered near the pavilion for the ceremony, calling the new features “a great asset in making the park accessible to everyone.” She noted that Alabama parks are increasingly embracing accessibility improvements to ensure all visitors—no matter their mobility—can experience the joy of the outdoors.
The new playground enhancements include handicapped-accessible swings and improved pathways, designed so that children and families with mobility limitations can safely and comfortably enjoy the park.
Steve Tucker of the Cherokee County Park Board expressed gratitude to the Cherokee County Commission, the Park Board, and the Chamber for their joint effort in making the project possible. “A portion of the money came from a community raffle,” Tucker said, “but when the board and commission saw the importance of this project, they stepped up to make sure it happened.”
Park Board members Ronnie Rogers and Sabree Lindsey also spoke at the event, sharing their excitement about the new features and the park’s ongoing commitment to inclusion.
Cherokee Rock Village has long been a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike. Known for its stunning rock formations, panoramic overlooks, and wealth of outdoor activities—including hiking, camping, horseback riding, and rock climbing—the park attracts adventurers from across the country and even around the world.
