Cherokee County Sheriff Warns Residents of Ongoing Phone Scams

Cherokee County-The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the public to a series of active phone scams targeting local residents.

In one scam, callers claim that a warrant has been issued for the recipient’s arrest due to failure to appear for jury duty. The scammer demands a $500 fine to prevent the arrest, stating the warrant will be recalled once payment is made.

In a second scam, individuals are contacted by someone posing as a representative of a bonding company regarding a family member who is actually in jail. The caller offers to post bond if payment is made online, over the phone, or via a mobile payment app. Victims who pay in this manner lose their money, and no bond is posted.

Authorities stress that legitimate bonding companies and law enforcement agencies will never request payments over the phone or through payment apps.

Residents are urged not to make any payments unless they have independently verified the request. If a call seems suspicious, it is recommended to hang up and contact the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office directly using the official phone number.

Officials encourage residents to remain cautious, avoid sharing personal or financial information over the phone, and report any suspected scams to local law enforcement.
