ROME – A Floyd County Jail inmate is facing several additional charges after an incident inside the jail.
According to Coosa Valley News, Richard David Whittington, 28, of Rome, allegedly used a hard rod to smash a wall-mounted television. Jail officials valued the television at approximately $219.
Authorities also say Whittington struck another inmate in the back. Reports indicate the inmate suffered visible markings. Investigators believe the assault was part of an attempt to start a riot inside the jail.
Jail reports also accuse Whittington of threatening to kill correctional officers. Authorities say he also threatened the other inmate. Officials say he ignored repeated commands from jail staff during the incident.
Whittington now faces five additional charges. They include unlawful acts of violence in a penal institution, obstruction of law enforcement, terroristic threats and acts, interference with government property, and battery.
