WEIS LISTENING AREA – Residents across the WEIS listening area should prepare for the possibility of severe weather and dangerous heat today as the National Weather Service in Birmingham continues to monitor conditions across northeast Alabama.
The National Weather Service has placed much of north Alabama under a Level 1 out of 5 Marginal Risk for severe thunderstorms today. However, Cherokee and Etowah counties have been upgraded to a Level 2 out of 5 Slight Risk for severe weather, indicating a greater potential for stronger storms.

Forecasters say the greatest threat for severe weather is expected between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. While not everyone will experience severe weather, storms that develop could become strong to severe. (The time was updated from beginning at 1 PM by the NWS)
Damaging Winds and Large Hail Possible
The primary threats with any severe thunderstorms include:
- Damaging wind gusts of up to 60 mph.
- Large hail up to the size of a quarter.
Residents are encouraged to remain weather aware throughout the afternoon and evening and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings if severe storms develop.

Major Heat Risk Continues

In addition to the severe weather threat, dangerous heat will continue across the region.
The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for much of Central Alabama through Friday, and a major heat risk remains in place across the area. Afternoon temperatures should climb into the upper 90s, while heat index values could approach or exceed 110 degrees in some locations.
Officials encourage residents to limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing, and check on elderly neighbors and those without adequate cooling. Children and pets should never be left unattended inside vehicles, even for a short period.
Stay Weather Aware
Forecasts can change throughout the day, and additional watches or warnings may be issued if conditions warrant. Residents across the WEIS listening area are encouraged to monitor forecasts and follow updates from the National Weather Service in Birmingham as conditions evolve.
WEIS News will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as additional information becomes available.
