Tuesday afternoon, a vehicle towing a vehicle to the scrap yard caused wide spread grass and brush fires along U.S. Highway 411 from the Alabama-Georgia State Line to the location near county road 45 in Cherokee County.  According to an eye witness, the towed vehicle was causing sparks as a wheel without a tire touched the pavement.

McCords Crossroads, Ellisville, Centre, Spring Garden, and Cave Spring Fire Units responded to battle the blazes and protect structures along the route. The Alabama Forestry Unit was called to help contain the quickly spreading fire. Cherokee County Sheriff’s Units responded with Alabama State Trooper to help control the flow of traffic as firefighters worked along the busy highway to put out the fires. At one time, the highway was shut down from the State Line to County Road 45.

Cherokee County EMA Director, Shawn Rogers was on the scene directing the multiple agencies to the areas they were needed.

There were no injuries reported. However, Atrium Floyd EMS was called to the scene as a precaution.

At this time we have not received any reports of any damage to structures although some were threatened.

The fire units on the scene said the smoke from the areas could linger into the evening although the fire was fully contained by 4:40 PM.
