Stephen Maturen/Getty Images(ST. CLOUD, Minn.) — The off-duty police officer who shot and killed the knife-wielding Minnesota mall attacker said he is staying out of the spotlight until the investigation is over, but is grateful for all the messages of support he has received.

Jason Falconer, who has been hailed a “hero” by many Americans, including the president, went right back to work after bravely intervening in Saturday’s stabbing incident at the Crossroad’s Center Mall in St. Cloud, Minnesota, according to local ABC News affiliate KSTP-TV.

Ten bystanders suffered injuries when Dahir Ahmed Adan, 20, began stabbing people at the shopping center. None of the injuries are life-threatening, authorities said. Falconer shot Adan dead, and authorities believe his quick action saved lives.

Falconer spoke to KSTP-TV at the Tactical Advantage, a firearms shop where he is an employee.

Falconer said he was at the mall on Saturday “buying his son’s birthday present,” which he was able to bring home despite the horrific scene that unfolded.

Falconer said he shot at Adan “to stop the threat.”

The Avon Police Department said in a statement that Falconer has worked as a part-time police officer since 2007, and also works as Avon City’s firearms training officer.

President Obama told reporters Monday that he thanked Falconer on the phone.

“I talked to off-duty police officer there, who undoubtedly saved a lot of lives and prevented additional injury. I told him that once again the American people were appreciative of his work and his heroism,” Obama said.
