ALBERTVILLE– Former Albertville Police Department officer Jeremy Hannah has been arrested following an investigation into his alleged misuse of law enforcement databases.
Marshall County District Attorney Jennifer Bray announced the arrest after her office conducted an independent investigation at the department’s request.
According to Bray, APD placed Hannah on administrative leave with pay while investigators reviewed the allegations.
Bray said investigators found that Hannah improperly accessed law enforcement databases. The alleged activity included multiple searches through the Alabama Criminal Justice Information System Law Enforcement Tactical System, known as ACJIS/LETS.
Investigators determined Hannah searched for information about his ex-spouse and one of her close family members. Bray said the searches had no legitimate law enforcement or public safety purpose.
The district attorney’s office immediately provided its findings to APD. The department then began the process of terminating Hannah’s employment, according to the release.
Hannah faces two charges stemming from the alleged unauthorized access. One charge alleges a violation of the Alabama Digital Crimes Act, a Class B felony.
The second charge falls under Title 41 of the Alabama Code. Bray described it as an unclassified offense punishable by up to five years in prison.
Prosecutors plan to present the case to a Marshall County grand jury. Additional charges remain possible.
Bray credited Assistant Chief Investigator Jimmy Miller and Commander Justin Dake for their work. She also thanked APD and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency for their cooperation.
Bray said officers receive access to sensitive information solely to protect the public and enforce the law. She described unauthorized access for personal reasons as a serious breach of public trust.
Hannah is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
