CENTRE– The City of Centre has adopted the 2021 International Fire Code, bringing local fire and life safety standards up to date.
The code sets requirements for fire prevention, emergency access and fire protection systems. It also covers hazardous materials and safety measures for commercial and public buildings.
In addition, the updated standards will guide new construction, renovations, business operations and fire prevention efforts across the city.
The Centre Fire Department plans to work with business owners, developers, contractors and residents. Department officials will provide education and guidance about the new requirements.
Most existing buildings will not need upgrades if they met the rules in place when they were built. However, the city may require changes when a building’s use changes, a dangerous condition exists or state law requires an update.
City officials said the new code strengthens Centre’s efforts to protect lives and property. The update also gives businesses and builders clearer, more consistent safety standards.
