Fire officials say inspections are designed to identify and correct potential hazards before they can develop into emergencies. Trained personnel evaluate buildings to ensure they meet basic fire safety standards and remain in compliance with local and state requirements.
During inspections, firefighters focus on several key safety areas, including ensuring exits are clearly marked and accessible, verifying that fire alarms and sprinkler systems are operational, checking the safe storage of flammable or hazardous materials, maintaining clear fire lanes and emergency access routes, and confirming that occupancy limits and safety codes are being followed.
In addition to identifying hazards, inspections also support the development of pre-incident plans for commercial buildings. These plans provide critical information to responding firefighters, including building layouts, entry and exit points, utility shutoffs, and the location of fire protection systems. Officials say this information allows for faster, safer, and more effective emergency response when seconds matter.
Fire inspections are required for new construction projects, prior to the opening of any business for a Certificate of Occupancy, and on a recurring basis for existing commercial properties. A Certificate of Occupancy indicates that a building has been inspected and meets minimum safety standards for use.
Officials stress that operating without proper inspection approval or a valid Certificate of Occupancy is a violation of city ordinance and state law and can place employees, customers, property owners, and emergency personnel at risk.
When violations are identified, the fire department may take enforcement actions that can include written notices, follow-up inspections, coordination with city officials regarding business licensing, citations, or in serious cases, orders to stop work or close a facility until issues are corrected. Immediate action may be taken when life safety hazards are present.
Despite enforcement authority, fire officials emphasize that the department’s primary goal is education and cooperation. Inspectors work with business owners and property managers to explain necessary corrections, provide guidance on compliance, and allow reasonable time to address issues whenever possible.
The department states that its mission is to support businesses while ensuring public safety standards are met. By identifying and correcting fire risks early, officials say inspections play a critical role in preventing fires, reducing injuries, and protecting the community as a whole.
