Southside Mourns Passing of Former Mayor Wally Burns

SOUTHSIDE — The City of Southside is mourning the passing of former Mayor Wally Burns, a longtime public servant and Vietnam veteran who spent more than two decades serving the community, including 20 years as mayor.
Burns, a lifelong Southside resident and former Goodyear employee, was widely recognized for his steady leadership and his role in guiding the city through a period of growth and development.
During his tenure as mayor, Southside saw several major community and infrastructure projects completed, including the development of the Southside Sports Complex and community center. The city also undertook significant road paving efforts, expanded public services, and upgraded public safety equipment. Burns was also involved in strengthening the city’s fire department and supporting improvements to parks and other public spaces.
Mayor Joey Statum said Burns’ influence on the city will be long lasting.
“Wally dedicated more than two decades to serving the people of Southside, including 20 years as Mayor,” Statum said. “He always put the people of Southside first. His leadership, vision, and steady commitment to doing what was right for this city will leave a lasting impact for generations.”
Statum also noted Burns’ deep ties to the community and his lifelong commitment to service, both in the military and in local government.
Burns is survived by his wife, Retha, their daughters, grandchildren, and extended family.
City officials are asking residents to keep the Burns family in their thoughts and prayers during this time of loss, and to join in recognizing his years of service to the community.
