Flood Watch Issued as Severe Storm Threat Increases Across Central Alabama

BIRMINGHAM — The National Weather Service in Birmingham has issued a Flood Watch for much of Central Alabama as forecasters warn of a heightened risk of severe weather and heavy rainfall beginning this afternoon and continuing through early Thursday morning.

The Flood Watch is in effect from 4 p.m. today until 6 a.m. Thursday and includes a broad area of Central Alabama, covering counties such as Cherokee, Calhoun, Etowah, Jefferson, Shelby, Talladega, and Tuscaloosa, among many others.

Forecasters say the timing of severe storms has been adjusted to reflect a potentially earlier onset, with thunderstorms expected to develop this afternoon and intensify into the overnight hours. The system carries a Level 3 out of 5 risk for severe weather, indicating the potential for numerous strong storms.

Primary threats associated with this system include tornadoes, damaging wind gusts, and hail up to the size of quarters.

In addition to the severe weather risk, heavy rainfall is expected to accompany these storms, with the potential for several inches of rain in some areas. While the exact placement of the heaviest rainfall remains uncertain, conditions are favorable for excessive runoff and localized flooding.

Officials warn that flooding could impact rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying or flood-prone areas. Urban locations and areas with poor drainage may also experience flooding, and rapidly rising المياه levels could cause creeks and streams to overflow their banks.

The National Weather Service also notes a risk of isolated to scattered flash flooding, particularly during the overnight hours.

Residents are urged to stay weather-aware, monitor updated forecasts, and be prepared to act if warnings are issued. Those living in flood-prone areas should have a plan in place and be ready to move to higher ground if necessary.
