Retired Gadsden Police Sergeant Passes Away

GADSDEN, Ala.– The Gadsden Police Department is mourning the loss of former Sergeant Alonzo “Lonnie” Russell Jr., who passed away Wednesday, February 18, 2026.

Sergeant Russell proudly served both his country and his community. Following his service in the United States Army, he made Gadsden his home and began a career with the Gadsden Police Department, where he later retired with the rank of sergeant.

He was widely known throughout the community for his outgoing personality, quick wit, and genuine kindness. Friends and colleagues say Lonnie never met a stranger and treated everyone he encountered with respect.

Outside of law enforcement, Russell was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed cooking for family and friends, spending time at the shooting range teaching his children, and relaxing with classic horror films. Above all, he cherished family and community.

Sergeant Russell is survived by his wife, Sabrina Russell; his children, Courtney Russell, Amanda Hunter, Justin Russell, and Joshua Russell; and his grandchildren, Amir, Akim, and Amor Russell.

The department extends its deepest condolences to the Russell family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing and serving alongside him. His legacy of service and friendship will not be forgotten.
