Centre Home Damaged in Early-Morning Structure Fire

CENTRE — A structure fire damaged a residence in Centre early Tuesday morning, January 20, prompting a multi-agency emergency response.
According to the Centre Fire Department, crews were dispatched at approximately 12:30 a.m. to a home in the 500 block of 2nd Avenue East, near the Cherokee County Public Library. Units from the Centre, Leesburg, and Cedar Bluff fire departments responded, along with Atrium Floyd EMS.

Firefighters worked to contain the blaze, achieving knockdown at approximately 1:37 a.m. DC Gas and the Cherokee Electric Cooperative were also called to the scene to disconnect utilities as a safety precaution.
No injuries were reported. The American Red Cross was contacted to assist those affected by the fire. Fire units initially cleared the scene and returned to service at approximately 2:43 a.m.
At around 3:00 a.m., a second page was issued after embers flared up, reigniting portions of the structure. Centre and Cedar Bluff fire units returned to the scene and extinguished the remaining fire. All units were back in service by approximately 4:54 a.m.
While some witnesses indicated the fire may have originated from a heat lamp, officials stated that the official cause of the fire remains under investigation.
