GADSDEN, Ala.– One person has died following a residential fire in Gadsden on New Year’s Eve.

GADSDEN, Ala.– One person has died following a residential fire in Gadsden on New Year’s Eve.
According to the Gadsden Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched to the 2900 block of Shahan Avenue at approximately 4:50 p.m. Wednesday after receiving reports of a structure fire.
Fire crews reported visible smoke upon arrival. Officials said firefighters made entry into the residence within minutes and discovered an elderly man deceased inside the home. The fire was quickly brought under control.
The victim has been identified as George E. Newsom, 80, of Gadsden.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The Gadsden Fire Department Arson Task Force, the Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office, and the Gadsden Police Department are assisting with the investigation.
This marks the second fatal fire in Gadsden within a week. The first occurred on Christmas Day.
