Driver Injured After Striking Deer in Cedar Bluff

Use Caution as Deer Activity Increases

Cedar Bluff – One person was injured Sunday evening after the vehicle she was driving struck a deer near the intersection of Highway 68 and Boundary Avenue, close to the Gaylesville line.

The accident happened just before nightfall, and first responders from the Cedar Bluff Police Department, Cedar Bluff Fire Department, and Atrium Floyd EMS were called to the scene. The driver complained of multiple injuries and was treated before being transported to a hospital for further evaluation. The crash remains under investigation.

As temperatures drop, deer are becoming more active, increasing the risk of collisions on area roadways. Authorities are reminding drivers to take extra precautions to avoid hitting deer.

Deer Safety Tips for Drivers

Before You Drive:

  • Be aware of peak times: Deer are most active at dawn and dusk, especially during the fall mating season. Slow down and be extra cautious during these times.

  • Look for signs: Watch for “Deer Crossing” signs that mark areas where deer are frequently seen.

  • Know your route: Be alert in high-risk areas where wooded areas, fields, or rivers meet the roadway.

While You Are Driving:

  • Slow down: Reduce your speed, particularly in high-risk zones or during dawn and dusk.

  • Use high beams: When there is no oncoming traffic, use your high beams to better spot deer ahead.

  • Stay alert for eyes: Watch for the reflection of your headlights in a deer’s eyes near the road.

  • Honk your horn: Use one long horn blast to scare deer away if you spot one nearby.

  • Scan for the herd: Deer often travel in groups—if you see one, more are likely nearby.

If You See a Deer:

  • Brake firmly and stay in your lane: Do not swerve, as this could cause a more serious crash.

  • Steer straight: If a collision is unavoidable, maintain a straight path to retain control of your vehicle.

  • Brake until impact: Continue braking to reduce your speed as much as possible.

  • Buckle up: Always wear your seatbelt to minimize the risk of injury.

With deer on the move during the cooler months, local authorities urge all motorists to remain cautious and alert to help prevent accidents and injuries.
