Etowah County Opens Cooling Stations to Help Residents Beat Extreme Heat

GADSDEN – With dangerously high temperatures affecting Northeast Alabama, Etowah County officials have announced the availability of several cooling stations throughout the county for residents needing relief from the heat.

The cooling stations are being made available through community partners and are open during designated business hours. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of these locations if they need a safe, air-conditioned place to escape the extreme temperatures.

The following cooling stations are available:

  • The Salvation Army – 114 North 11th Street, Gadsden, open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
  • Gadsden Public Library – 254 South College Street, Gadsden. Hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m.; and Saturday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. The library is closed on Sundays and holidays.
  • Alabama City 2700 – The Freedom Center, West Meighan Boulevard, Gadsden, open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Etowah County Emergency Management Agency encourages residents, particularly senior citizens, young children, and those with medical conditions, to take precautions during periods of extreme heat by staying hydrated, limiting time outdoors during the hottest part of the day, and seeking air-conditioned shelter when necessary.

Officials remind residents that the cooling stations are available to provide a safe and comfortable environment for anyone needing relief from the summer heat.
