OXFORD-A student brought a firearm onto the Oxford High School campus Tuesday, according to a statement from Oxford Police Chief Daniel Phipps.
Phipps issued the statement on behalf of the Oxford Police Department and Oxford City Schools.
He said established safety-reporting procedures were followed, and Oxford police officers responded immediately.
According to Phipps, authorities handled the situation promptly, and no credible threat remained at the school.
The school will follow its established disciplinary procedures. Meanwhile, police will continue handling the matter as appropriate.
“The safety of our students and school staff is our top priority,” Phipps said.
In addition, Phipps thanked school faculty and administrators for their quick response and continued commitment to campus safety.
However, the statement did not identify the student or describe the firearm. It also did not address possible charges or explain how officials learned about the firearm.
