JACKSONVILLE–Calhoun County Career Academy announced Tuesday that it has received a $2.48 million state grant to support construction of a new career and technical education facility, according to Calhoun County Schools.
The award comes through the Alabama State Department of Education’s Career and Technical Education Facilities Grant program.
District officials said the proposed facility will add classrooms, a cafeteria, and meeting space. In addition, the project will provide more room to expand existing programs and develop additional career pathways for students.
Calhoun County Schools Superintendent Tony Willis described the project as an investment in workforce development as well as an expansion of the academy’s facilities. He said the additional space will help the district strengthen partnerships with employers and prepare students for industry credentials and careers in high-demand fields.
Meanwhile, the academy serves students in grades 10 through 12 from high schools across the Calhoun County school district. Students can receive training in areas including automotive technology, construction, collision repair, culinary arts, health science, electrical and mechatronics technology, precision machining, and welding.
Additionally, the academy connects eligible students with Gadsden State Community College dual-enrollment opportunities, allowing them to earn college credit while completing technical training.
According to the state education department, the grant program draws from a $150 million statewide initiative supporting regional career and technical education centers. The Alabama Legislature authorized the funding through Act 2026-600, with grants available for qualifying construction, capital improvements, and equipment expenses.
The academy reported record enrollment during the 2025-26 school year and said the new facility will help it accommodate additional students while expanding partnerships with industry and higher education.
However, the district has not announced a construction schedule or projected completion date for the new facility.
