Scottsboro Doctor Suspended Amid Sexual Misconduct, Drug Allegations

Scottsboro, Ala. – The Alabama State Board of Medical Examiners has temporarily suspended the medical license of Dr. Alan J. Wayne, a longtime family physician in Scottsboro, following multiple allegations of sexual misconduct and improper prescribing practices.

The Board issued the suspension on April 10, citing a range of violations, including sexual misconduct in the practice of medicine, unprofessional conduct related to inappropriate sexual comments to patients, and the self-prescribing of Soma, a controlled substance. Wayne is also accused of prescribing and dispensing controlled substances without a legitimate medical purpose, tied to irregularities in urine drug screenings.

According to official documents, allegations against Wayne date back as far as 1998, when the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation into his alleged sexual boundary violations and questionable prescribing behavior. Despite those early concerns, Wayne continued practicing medicine for more than two decades.

The latest allegations emerged in 2024 and involve two patients, prompting the Board to open a new investigation. Several former patients and ex-employees have since come forward with complaints, adding to a growing list of concerns about Wayne’s professional conduct.

In response to the findings, the Board has ordered Wayne to cease and desist from practicing medicine in Alabama. A formal hearing to review the charges has been scheduled for July 23 in Montgomery.
