CENTRE – Customers and employees safely evacuated The Gridiron Wednesday night after smoke appeared in the restaurant’s kitchen during a power outage. No injuries were reported, and firefighters found no fire.
Witnesses said customers were playing bingo and eating when the power went out. Smoke began coming from the kitchen shortly afterward, prompting employees to direct everyone outside.
The Centre Fire Department and Centre Police Department responded to the restaurant. The Leesburg Fire Department also assisted, while Atrium Health Floyd EMS responded as a precaution.
Dispatchers initially placed the Cedar Bluff Fire Department on standby. They canceled that response after Centre firefighters arrived and assessed the situation.
The initial assessment indicated the outage stopped the kitchen’s ventilation fans. However, crews found no active fire inside the restaurant.
Power was out across much of Centre during the incident. Service was restored by approximately 8:25 p.m.
The cause of the outage had not been determined.
