Parkdale Mills Shutting Down Alexander City Plant

An Alexander City textile mill is closing next month.

The Alabama Department of Commerce’s “Warning List”, which posts notifications of companies planning to close plants or layoff employees, is stating that Parkdale Mills will begin closing July 24th, costing 113 people their jobs.  That closure marks the end of an era – as Parkdale Mills purchased the old Avondale Mills operation after it closed down in 2006.  That textile plant had been in operation for more than a century.

The Outlook is reporting that the company will help some employees re-locate to its Leesburg operation, located in Cherokee County.  Billing itself as the “world’s leading manufacturer of spun yarns,” Parkdale is the largest consumer of cotton in the U.S. – the company produces more than 8,000 tons of products weekly, at 29 plants, across the U.S., Mexico, and South America.
