Early Thursday morning, Gadsden Police responded to a hit-and-run along Stonewall Street, near Madison Avenue, after a pedestrian was struck by a Jeep Grand Cherokee, which then fled the scene.
The victim sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to UAB for medical treatment. Fortunately, the injuries are not considered life-threatening, according to police.
With the help of public information, law enforcement identified Michael Lee Kelton, 42, of Boaz, as the suspect.
Later that day, Kelton turned himself in to the Gadsden Police Department, where he was questioned and charged with leaving the scene of an accident, a felony offense.
“I’m proud of our officers’ hard work and grateful for the community’s support. Together, we make a difference,” Gadsden Police Chief Lamar Jaggears said.
Attalla Police Department, Rainbow City Police Department, and the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the investigation.
In a press release, Gadsden Police said, “This collaboration, paired with the determination of our officers, really highlights what can be accomplished when the community and law enforcement work together.”
