BOE Receives Donation from Weiss Lake Improvement Association

During Tuesday’s meeting of the Cherokee County Board of Education, Carolyn Landrum, President of the Weiss Lake Improvement Association (WLIA) was on hand to present the board with a check in the amount of $2,900. Landrum said that the donation was in appreciation of the 29 teachers from across Cherokee County Schools who participated in last year’s “Renew Our Rivers” campaign. Landrum added that half of the donation was contributed by Alabama Power, which sponsors the annual clean-up, while the remaining half was contributed by WLIA.

In personnel action, several supplement changes were approved. Mandy Walker was removed from Jr. High softball and replaced by Kelsey Hillard. Those supplements were $800 each. Hillard was also removed from an $800 additional supplement for softball, while an $800 additional supplement for baseball was approved for Andrew Kinney. Additionally, a $1,000 Jr. High Girls Basketball supplement was approved for Tory McDaniel.

The final two supplements involved the creation of two new coaching classifications for the 2014-2015 school year. Supplements for boys cross-country and girls cross-country, at $900 each, were approved for Taylor Talbot at Cedar Bluff School.

Out of State travel was approved for Mandi Caldwell and Andrea Garrett to attend the At-Risk Conference in Savannah, GA in March of next year with expenses to be funded by At-Risk.

High School graduations originally scheduled for Wednesday, May 20th, have been rescheduled for Tuesday, May 19th. Superintendent Mitchell Guice stated that the move was needed because for many the Wednesday night graduation ceremonies would interfere with church services. The Thursday, May 21th graduation date will remain unchanged.

Also approved was the Homebound Contract.

The next regular Cherokee County Board of Education meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 7th, at 6 pm at the board’s central office.
