At the request of the Cherokee County Commission, State Senator Andrew Jones plans to introduce a bill that will provide a pay raise for the sheriff and the county revenue commissioner.
The current publication is being advertised and once that time frame expires it will formally be introduced as a bill.
The bill would provide for the compensation of the Revenue Commissioner and the Sheriff effective beginning the next term of office; and to provide for the continuing annual training of the Sheriff.
Details of the proposal can be viewed below;
Section 1: Effective beginning the next term of office, the Revenue Commissioner of Cherokee County shall receive an annual salary that is 85 percent of the annual salary of the Probate Judge of Cherokee County, except as otherwise provided in Section 4.
Section 2: Effective beginning with the next term of office, the Sheriff of Cherokee County shall receive an annual salary that is 60 percent of the annual salary of the District Attorney of the Ninth Judicial Circuit, except as otherwise provided in Section 4.
Section 3: Effective with the beginning of the next term of office, the Sheriff of Cherokee County shall annually complete a minimum of 12 hours of Executive level training provided by the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission.
Section 4: Sections 1 and 2 do not apply if the result would be a reduction in the annual salary of the revenue commissioner or sheriff.
Section 5: This act shall become effective immediately following its passage and approval by the Governor, or its otherwise becoming law.
The County Commission recently passed a resolution in favor of the legislation.
The current salaries for each office;
- Cherokee County District Attorney – $157,522.48
- Cherokee County Probate Judge – $108.996.36
- Cherokee County Sheriff – $83,338.80
- Cherokee County Revenue Commissioner – $75,464.88
