One person was killed and another seriously injured on Wednesday during a police pursuit that came to an end when the fleeing car left the roadway and hit several trees in Calhoun County.
19 year old Oak Park, Georgia resident Moses McElroy III was pronounced dead at WellStar Kennestone Regional Medical Center in Marietta, Georgia later that day; he was a passenger in a 2017 Nissan Altima that was involved in that high speed chase with deputies from the Calhoun County and Cleburne County Sheriff’s Office and the Piedmont Police Department. The driver of the vehicle, Chancey Conway, 21 of Detroit Michigan was air-lifted to WellStar Kennestone Regional Medical Center following the crash. No information regarding his condition has been made available.
Deputies with the Cleburne County Sheriff’s Office started pursuing the suspect’s vehicle on U.S. 78 in Fruithurst around 12:30pm according to Alabama State Troopers. The pursuit continued through Heflin into Calhoun County on Highway 9. Piedmont Police attempted to use spike strips to stop the car near the 237 mile marker – however the driver swerved to avoid the spikes; he then lost control, left the roadway, and crashed into several trees according to troopers.
Troopers later learned the car was stolen from Hertz Rental at the Wayne County Airport in Michigan. Alabama State Troopers were not involved in the pursuit; however the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating the crash. ALEA is reportedly calling this crash a traffic homicide investigation.
