Coming off a season-opening 34-8 loss to Class 4A Jacksonville, the Piedmont Bulldogs fell from the top spot in the Class 2A rankings in the latest Alabama Sports Writers Association high school football poll. The latest rankings were released early Wednesday morning.

The Bulldogs (0-1) dropped three spots to No. 4. Fyffe (1-0), coming off a 21-20 overtime win at Class 4A Central of Clay County (0-1), moved into the top spot in Class 2A this week.

Piedmont has another tough task ahead this week. The Bulldogs travel to Centre on Friday to face another Class 4A opponent, the Cherokee County Warriors (0-0), in the latest Battle of Highway 9. The Warriors, led by first-year coach Bayley Blanchard, are still receiving votes for the poll.

You can listen to the Foothills Tractor Mahindra Game of the Week live on WEIS radio (100.5 FM, 990 AM). Pregame begins at 6:30 p.m., with kickoff at 7 p.m. Tony Hathcock and Nolen Sanford will be on the call.

Staying in Class 2A, the Collinsville Panthers (1-0) remained at No. 8 following their 24-8 season-opening victory at Sylvania. Collinsville has this week off before entertaining Brindlee Mountain (0-1) on Thursday, Sept. 3.

One other area team continues to receive votes for the poll: Class 1A Spring Garden (0-1). The Panthers are coming off a 36-12 setback to Gaston and will host Sand Rock (0-0) this Friday at 7 p.m.

Other area games this Friday include Cedar Bluff (1-0) at Gaston (1-0) and Lindsay Lane (1-0) at Gaylesville (0-0).
