Cherokee BOE Approves 2014 Budget And 5 Year Capital Plan

The Cherokee County Board of Education approved the Fiscal Year 2014 Budget during their Tuesday night meeting.

School System Chief Financial Officer Robin Cunningham said that the projected beginning balance is 6.3-million dollars, 4.8-million in the General Fund.

The budget anticipates 38-million dollars in expenditures and a matching 38-million in revenues.

The anticipated ending balance is 6.4-million with 4.8-million in the General Fund.

The state requires a one month operating reserve.

The 2014 budget will include a 1.9 month operating reserve.

Also Tuesday, the board approved the 5 –year Capital Plan.

Projects for 2014 include: 400-thousand dollars for renovations of the locker rooms and weight room at Spring Garden High School, just over 469-thousand dollars for roofing and 350-thousand for a new metal PE building at Gaylesville High School, 40-thousand for roofing at Centre Elementary and 325-thousand dollars for roofing at Cherokee County High School.

Projects to be funded in 2015 include: Roofing and replacement of old HVAC units at Cedar Bluff High School at a cost of 550-thousand dollars, a 300-thousand dollar roofing project at the Cherokee County Career and Technology Center and 400-thousand for roofing at Centre Elementary.

2016 projects are: New HVAC and electrical along with the retro-fitting of windows at Centre Elementary at a projected cost of 930-thousand 750 dollars, various renovations to the Home Ec and Ag Departments at Cherokee County High at a cost of 200-thousand dollars, the renovation and upgrading of restrooms at Sand Rock High for 250-thousand and 150-thousand dollars for similar upgrades at Cherokee County High.

2017 projects include: 750-thousand dollars for a new building for the Ag program and Home Economics classrooms at Spring Garden High and 1-million dollars to renovate the bleachers at the Sand Rock High football stadium.

Projects for 2018 include: 500-thousand dollars to renovate bleachers for visitors in the stadium and softball field at Cedar Bluff; a million dollars for new metal buildings including offices, a board meeting room, workroom, restrooms and technology department for the Board of Education; and 125-thousand dollars to add lighting for band and soccer field at Cherokee County High.
