ETOWAH COUNTY– The Etowah County Sheriff’s Office is placing 40 automated external defibrillators in patrol vehicles to strengthen deputies’ response to life-threatening medical emergencies.
The agency purchased the Zoll AEDs through GoRescue. Grant funding came from the Alabama Council of Emergency Medical Services and opioid settlement funds designated for Alabama sheriff’s offices.
Sheriff Jonathon Horton said placing an AED in every patrol vehicle will help deputies provide immediate care before emergency medical personnel arrive.
“This initiative reflects our commitment to protecting the lives of those we serve,” Horton said. “Our deputies will be better equipped to provide immediate, lifesaving care during those critical moments.”
The next-generation devices provide defibrillation during cardiac emergencies. They also allow the Sheriff’s Office to monitor equipment availability, track deployments and collect response information.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, it is the first agency in the world to implement the technology. Officials said the collected information could help improve emergency response strategies and patient outcomes across Etowah County.
The Sheriff’s Office thanked Chief Keith Peek, East Alabama EMS Executive Director John Blue, and Rusty Lowe for their work on the project.
The agency also recognized State Representatives Mack Butler and Mark Gidley for helping secure the funding.
The Sheriff’s Office said the project reflects its continued focus on preparedness, innovation, and community partnerships.
