CHEROKEE COUNTY– The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office says investigators recently joined ABC Board personnel for compliance checks at retail stores throughout the county.

The checks focused on businesses that sell THC, hemp and kratom products. Investigators were working to make sure those businesses were following Alabama law.

During the inspections, investigators identified multiple products they said violated state law. Those products were seized as part of the ongoing investigation.

The Sheriff’s Office said law enforcement and healthcare providers have seen an increase in serious adverse reactions involving high-potency THC products, hemp products and excessive amounts of kratom.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, some products are marketed in ways that make them appear harmless. Officials said misuse of those products, along with illegal products, can create serious health and safety risks.

The Sheriff’s Office said Alabama’s updated laws regulating THC, hemp and kratom products were enacted to strengthen oversight. The laws also set requirements for the sale and distribution of those products.

Officials said the regulations are also designed to help protect the public, especially minors, from access to unregulated or unlawful products.

The Sheriff’s Office said it remains committed to enforcing Alabama law and protecting consumers. The office also said it will continue working to make sure businesses throughout Cherokee County operate within state regulations.

The Sheriff’s Office thanked law-abiding retailers for their cooperation.
