CENTRE – The City of Centre is providing clarification for residents regarding the keeping of livestock within city limits, a topic city officials say generates frequent questions from property owners.
According to the City of Centre’s zoning ordinance for the Single Family Residential District, livestock is permitted within the city under certain conditions.
City officials said livestock may be kept for non-commercial use and must be maintained for the benefit of the homeowner. In addition, the property must contain at least three acres of land to qualify.
The ordinance also establishes requirements for livestock-related structures. Any barns or similar buildings must be located in the rear yard of the property and must be situated at least 50 feet from all property lines.
The city noted that residents may keep animals such as chickens, goats, horses, and other livestock provided they meet the ordinance requirements.
Officials encourage residents with questions about their specific property or zoning requirements to contact the City of Centre for additional information and guidance.
