At the August 10th town council meeting Cedar Bluff Mayor Bill Warren explained a proposed trail that would connect all 67 Alabama counties. This walkway would connect local areas like Cherokee Rock Village, Leesburg Landing, the Centre City Park, Cornwall Furnace, and Little River Canyon.
This statewide project is called Sweet Trails Alabama, and it stems from Senate Bill 298 that passed in 2023. The task of planning, creating, and building a single trail throughout the state would be funded through grants with the monies managed by Jacksonville State University.
The plan was completed in November 2024, with the proposed trail stretching over 7,800 miles connecting state parks, national forests, and 341 municipalities. While hiking and biking are the main emphasis, the plan allows for some areas of the trail to include horseback, ATV riding, and even paddling. The plan can be found on the Sweet Trails Alabama web site.
The next stage sees Sweet Trails Alabama conducting feasibility studies for numerous segments of the proposed trail. According to Cedar Bluff Mayor Warren the organization is asking municipalities to adopt a resolution in support of the study and plan for the trail.
While the actual trail may still be years in the making, there is the hope that the plan will one day become a reality.
