At the August 11^th meeting the Centre City Council approved hiring Aubrie Elder as city clerk. The action comes after the resignation of former city clerk Sherrie Chandler. The council voted to post a position of assistant city clerk and to hire Jennifer Mackey as needed to train Elder.

At the meeting Mayor Jay Howell and Police Chief Kirk Blankenship awarded Officer Brandon Thompson the Life Saving Award. On June 10^th Thompson responded to a call where a female victim suffered from a life-threatening gunshot wound. Thompson and a Cedar Bluff officer rapidly applied two tourniquets to control the victim’s bleeding. Thompson’s swift intervention stabilized the victim until emergency personnel arrived. His actions directly contributed to the preserving of the woman’s life.

The group took other police department actions, including the purchase of two stationary radar units that can attach on poles, two office computers, and 14 rapidly deploying medical belts, one for each officer in the department.

The council approved parks and recreation contracts, including one with Northeast Alabama Officials. In another recreation item, the city decided to postpone action on the proposed outdoor basketball court so they can receive bids for the pad.

The city adopted a retiree-bonus provision, approved a National Alliance of Mental Illness donation, and approved the fire department’s printer/scanner to be surplused.

The council accepted Morrison Heating and Cooling’s bid to repair the air conditioner in the judicial building as well as OK Tire’s bid to repair a sanitation department truck.

Mayor Jay Howell explained the Sweet Trails Alabama plan to connect all 67 counties in the state by a trail. The council approved the city of Centre’s support for the development of the trail plan.
