Centre Officials Plan for Future Building Department Staffing
City officials are considering a proposal to expand the building department as part of future operational planning and the transition to the new City Hall facility.
Building inspector Raymond Matthews has requested the addition of a dedicated permit clerk for the building office once the department relocates to the new City Hall. He said the goal is to strengthen the department’s operations and create a building department that the city can be proud of.
Looking ahead to next year’s budget, Matthews also discussed the need to begin planning for the eventual training of a future building inspector. He suggested including funding in the upcoming budget cycle for a replacement position that would allow a full year of training alongside the current inspector.
Matthews noted that if the city chooses to hire a part-time assistant, he believed the workload could be handled efficiently. However, if officials determine that a full-time position is necessary, he said it would need to be formally included in the city’s budget. These discussions were held with the Building Committee and the mayor on Friday afternoon.
According to Matthews, the key priority for the position would be finding someone who is interested in the work, willing to complete the job effectively, and who possesses strong technology skills. He emphasized that familiarity with email and office equipment is critical for the role.
Future plans include drafting a formal job description for the potential position, proposing the creation of the permit clerk role, determining an estimated salary for the job, and presenting it to the city council for approval.
