Leesburg Town Council Meeting for Monday 02/02/2026

LEESBURG, Ala.– Leesburg leaders tackled a mix of maintenance, recreation and community projects during Monday night’s town council meeting, approving several expenditures aimed at improving local facilities and services.

Council members voted to pay monthly bills and approved the transfer of an alcohol license for the former Maverix business, which is now operating as Leesburg Food Mart. Mayor Brandy Pierce said all necessary paperwork has been completed for the new owners.

Improvements to the town ball field were a major focus of the meeting. The council reviewed plans to repair the lighting system, including 18 lights, replacement ballasts and bulbs, with an estimated cost of $26,500. Members also approved five loads of dirt totaling $3,000 to improve field conditions.

The council also agreed to hire the county highway department for approximately 10 hours of grading and ditch work to clean and shape drainage areas around town. The one-day project will cost $6,143.

In other action, the town approved a $750 contribution to CED Mental Health Center to help fund the annual Cherokee County Youth Prevention Conference.

Mayor and council members discussed progress on the ongoing sewer project, where crews continue laying pipe toward the Tillery Oaks and Sunset areas. Additional topics included purchasing turnout gear, replacing doors at town facilities, installing upgraded security cameras at the park, fire hall and police department, and gathering quotes for a future demolition project.

The meeting also featured remarks from Jesse Battles, a candidate for state senate, who spoke about recruiting industry, strengthening infrastructure and creating job opportunities. Battles said he hopes to work alongside local leaders to support growth and investment in the community.

Demolition Project

Discussion was held regarding demolition of an old structure and removal of gas tanks.

One estimate has been received, with additional hauling costs anticipated. More quotes will be gathered and presented at the next meeting before any decision is made.

Recreation Update

Football season preparations are underway.

Industry and Economic Development Remarks

Guest speaker Jesse Battles, who is running for state senate, addressed the council about recruiting new industry and creating job opportunities. He emphasized that infrastructure improvements can help increase revenue for roads, bridges, schools, and recreational facilities.

Battles expressed interest in attending future meetings and working with local officials to support the town’s growth and development.
