Cherokee County Deputies Receive PIT Training to Enhance Pursuit Safety

According to Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver, Cherokee County deputies participated in specialized Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) training aimed at improving the safety and effectiveness of high-speed vehicle pursuits. The PIT maneuver, a controlled tactic used to stop fleeing vehicles, is a critical skill for officers to minimize risks to the public, suspects, and law enforcement personnel.

The training was conducted at a closed course facility in Tennessee and included both classroom instruction and hands-on driving exercises. Deputies practiced safety executing the PIT at various speeds and under different conditions.

“This kind of training ensures our deputies are prepared to handle dangerous pursuits in a way that prioritizes public safety.” Said Sheriff Shaver. “We want to resolve these situations as quickly and safely as possible. Let me be clear, if someone chooses to commit criminal acts and endangers innocent motorist and law enforcement by fleeing, we will stop you.” The PIT training is part of ongoing professional development initiatives within the Sheriff’s Office. The classes will continue this summer and fall to PIT certify as many deputies as possible.
