GADSDEN– Only a few spots remain for a free firearms safety course, according to the Gadsden State Police Department.
The course takes place Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Beck Conference Center on Gadsden State Community College’s Wallace Drive Campus. It is open to adults 18 and older.
Retired Master Sgt. Jamie Grant, a Purple Heart recipient and decorated combat veteran, will participate as one of the special guest speakers.
Combat Veteran Brings Decades of Experience
According to the department, Grant served 22 years in the military, including deployments to Afghanistan and Africa. His experience also includes working alongside U.S. Army Special Forces.
In addition, Grant has specialized training in personal protection, situational awareness, and operating under pressure.
He also spent 20 years supporting the Alabama National Guard Counterdrug Program, working alongside local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
The department encourages both new firearm owners and those seeking to strengthen their knowledge and confidence to attend. Families and loved ones can also take the training together, provided participants meet the age requirement.
Classroom Instruction and Live Range Training
The annual civilian firearms course combines classroom instruction with practical range training.
First, classroom instruction runs from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Beck Conference Center, 203 College Drive in Gadsden. The department will also provide lunch.
Afterward, live range training takes place from noon to 2 p.m. Certified firearms instructors from multiple law enforcement agencies will lead the sessions.
Course topics include firearm safety, pistol-shooting basics, firearm types and functions, legal responsibilities, self-defense, and situational awareness.
Participants must bring a functioning handgun, a proper holster, eye and ear protection, and 50 rounds of ammunition.
