CENTRE — Cpl. Gavin Johnson has been promoted to investigator with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, marking a new step in his law enforcement career.

Sheriff Jeff Shaver and Chief Deputy Josh Summerford presented Johnson with his new badge during the promotion announcement. The Sheriff’s Office said Johnson earned the opportunity through hard work and dedication to the department.

In addition, the promotion moves Johnson into the agency’s Investigations Division. There, he will take on new responsibilities while continuing to serve Cherokee County.

Johnson Moves Into Investigations

Johnson has served the Sheriff’s Office as a corporal, and his work has earned recognition within the department. In 2024, he received several awards during the agency’s annual awards program.

For example, Johnson was recognized for most miles patrolled, most DUI arrests, most warrants served, and most reports completed. Those honors reflected his activity and consistency while working in patrol.

Now, Johnson will bring that experience to the Investigations Division. The division handles follow-up work on criminal cases after many initial reports are made through patrol.

Investigators also gather evidence, interview people connected to cases, and work to establish the facts. Afterward, their findings may be submitted to prosecutors for review.

Therefore, the move gives Johnson an opportunity to use his patrol experience in a different area of law enforcement. It also places him alongside investigators who handle a wide range of cases across Cherokee County.

Sheriff’s Office Congratulates Johnson

The Sheriff’s Office congratulated Johnson and said it is proud to have him serving in the new position. Department officials also said they believe he will be a strong addition to the Investigations Division.

Meanwhile, the promotion highlights Johnson’s continued growth within the agency. His previous work placed him on the front line of daily law enforcement service in Cherokee County.

As an investigator, however, his focus will shift toward follow-up work after an initial call or report. That work can include reviewing information, developing leads, gathering evidence, and coordinating with other law enforcement personnel.

In addition, investigators may work with other agencies when a case requires additional resources or cooperation. The Sheriff’s Office says its Investigations Division works with local, state, federal, and military law enforcement agencies.

Ultimately, Johnson’s promotion recognizes his service and opens a new chapter in his career with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office. He now continues that service as Investigator Gavin Johnson.
