LEESBURG– The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office hosted a 16-hour Crisis Intervention Team class for law enforcement and corrections personnel this week.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Training Academy brought the class to the Cherokee County training center in Leesburg. The Alabama Sheriffs Association’s training calendar listed the course for Sept. 23-24.

Participants came from the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, the Alabama Bureau of Pardons and Paroles, and the Blount County Sheriff’s Office. Personnel from the Fort Payne Police Department and Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office also attended, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.

Cherokee County CIT Officer Greg Walker helped teach the class and shared his experience with those attending, the sheriff’s office said.

The training focused on recognizing when someone may be experiencing a mental health crisis. It also covered communication, de-escalation and compassionate intervention during those encounters.

The sheriff’s office thanked the Jefferson County academy for bringing the class to the area. It said continued training and cooperation with other agencies help its staff serve local communities.
