SUMMERVILLE– Chattooga County will offer free Community Emergency Response Team training for residents interested in disaster preparedness and emergency response.
The one-day class will run from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Sept. 19. Organizers will hold the training at the Chattooga County CRC, located at 48 Eleanor Avenue in Summerville.
The facility is the former North Summerville School located off Highland Avenue. The county will provide lunch for participants.
The FEMA-supported CERT program teaches citizens how to assist their communities before, during, and after disasters. During the class, participants will learn basic disaster response, fire suppression, medical operations, disaster psychology, and search and rescue.
The program also prepares volunteers to support their neighborhoods when professional first responders must focus on critical needs.
Chattooga County CERT members have previously assisted during local emergencies. In April 2025, WEIS Radio reported that CERT volunteers helped rescue three people stranded by floodwaters in Summerville.
