RAINBOW CITY– The Rainbow City Police Department is mourning retired Officer Robert “Wayne” Garmon, who died peacefully Monday, Aug. 24. He was 89.

Born in Gadsden, Garmon devoted much of his life to serving and protecting others. His public service included honorable service in both the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army.

Later, his law enforcement career took him from Pennsylvania to Alabama.

Garmon first served with the Rainbow City Police Department from April 1, 1989, through Feb. 28, 1999. He returned to the department Jan. 4, 2008, and served until Nov. 30, 2011.

Additionally, Garmon served with the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office before retiring.

Beyond his years of public service, the department remembered Garmon as a devoted father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Officials said he would also be remembered for the many lives he touched.

“The Rainbow City Police Department extends our deepest condolences to the Garmon family, his friends, former colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him,” the department said.

According to Shoemaker Funeral Home, visitation will be held Friday, Aug. 28, from 5 to 7 p.m. Eastern time in Blairsville, Pennsylvania.

A funeral service will begin Saturday, Aug. 29, at 11 a.m. Eastern time. Military honors will follow the service.

Garmon will later be laid to rest at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo.

Finally, the department thanked Garmon for his service to the country, his communities, and the people he dedicated his life to protecting.

“Rest easy, Officer Garmon,” the department said.
