CENTRE — The Cherokee County Board of Education conducted its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 9, at the Cherokee County Schools Central Office, approving a number of financial, personnel, and operational items as the system continues preparations for the 2026-2027 school year.
The meeting was called to order at 4 p.m. and included the opening prayer, Pledge of Allegiance, welcome, and establishment of a quorum. Following approval of the agenda, board members approved the minutes from the May 21 special called meeting.
The board also received the April 2026 financial report, including the April bank reconciliation, cash balance, and financial statements based on reconciled bank statements and the general ledger as of April 30.
Among the financial items approved was Fiscal Year 2026 Budget Amendment No. 2. Board members also reviewed proposed salary schedules for the upcoming 2026-2027 school year.
One of the major action items approved was a School Resource Officer Agreement covering the period of October 1, 2025, through September 30, 2030.
The board also approved two bid-related items. The first awarded ITB#26-024 for modular classrooms at Cedar Bluff Pre-K to McKinney Construction in the amount of $475,487. McKinney was identified as the sole responsive and responsible bidder. The second action approved a 12-month extension of Child Nutrition Program Bid #25-07 with Flowers Bakeries Sales of Alabama, LLC.
Board members approved a revision to summer school dates on the 2026-2027 academic calendar and approved energy savings budgets for both Centre Elementary School and Spring Garden School.
Several items were declared surplus property, including a Scag Tigercat lawn mower at Centre Middle School, two Samsung 50-inch Smart TVs at the Cherokee County Career and Technology Center, an HP DesignJet T795 large-format plotter printer, and an Apperson DataLink 600 Scantron machine.
The board approved travel for Cherokee County High School’s volleyball team to attend activities at the University of North Alabama in Florence from July 16-18. The trip will be funded by the Cherokee County High School volleyball program.
A number of personnel actions were also approved.
Resignations included Abby Bannister, Board Certified Behavior Analyst, effective August 1, and Hannah Danielle Cooper, math teacher at Cedar Bluff School, effective immediately.
Approved certified transfers included Casey Rogers from Centre Elementary School to Spring Garden School.
Certified placements approved for the upcoming school year included Deborah Ragan as a part-time certified tutor at Cedar Bluff School, Tabatha Wright as an elementary teacher at Centre Elementary School, Austin Bishop as a middle school teacher at Centre Middle School, Allison Rogers as assistant principal at Cherokee County High School effective August 1, and Victoria Davis as an English teacher at Cherokee County High School.
The board approved the transfer of Linda Weaver from Centre Middle School to Gaylesville School as a seven-hour Child Nutrition Program employee.
Classified placements included Donna Young as office aide at Centre Elementary School, Melissa Itson as a Child Nutrition Program worker at Centre Middle School, Rio Hernandez as a Child Nutrition Program worker at Cherokee County High School, Emily Shankles as a Child Nutrition Program worker at Sand Rock School, Kimberlee Gowens as a countywide special education paraprofessional with bus aide responsibilities, and Halle Hilyer as a gifted exceptionality paraprofessional. The latter two appointments remain contingent upon background clearance and verification of qualifications.
Summer placements approved by the board included Kristie Lloyd as an extended summer paraprofessional substitute, Lisa Hendon for Summer Reading Camp at Gaylesville School, Matt West as a high school summer school teacher at Gaylesville School, and Shyann Wells as a Summer Reading Camp substitute at Cedar Bluff School pending completion of paperwork.
The board also approved contract positions funded through the 21st Century program and Summer Reading Academy. Student tutors approved included Skyleigh Ellis, Kylie Vadon, and Brooklyn Hall. Shyann Wells was approved as a certified tutor through the 21st Century program at a rate of $35 per hour.
Supplemental pay approvals included additional summer workdays for Sally Campbell, Amy Justus, Adrea Tevaga, Fernanda Akes, Jennifer Beddingfield, and Lindsey Oliver through various funding sources.
Principal Act supplements were also approved, including $7,500 for Jonathan McWhorter and $10,000 each for Bobby Tittle and Brian Clowdis, funded through the state.
The board approved several TEAMS contracts pending verification of qualifications, scheduling requirements, and Alabama State Department of Education approval. Those included Garrett Crane, Andrew McBrayer, Melissa Pharr, Laura Poole, Tyler Tidwell, and Lisa Jarrett.
A leave of absence request for Alexandria Cash, office aide at Spring Garden School, was also approved.
Board members additionally approved professional development requests and reviewed current job postings throughout the school system.
Before adjourning, the board announced its next regular meeting will be held Monday, July 13, 2026, at 4 p.m. at the Cherokee County Schools Central Office in Centre. The meeting was then adjourned.
