WEIS Radio Welcomes Rising Country Artist Jacob Johnson for In-Studio Interview

CENTRE — Rising country artist Jacob Johnson stopped by the WEIS Radio studios Thursday afternoon, May 14, for an in-studio interview and live performance during the afternoon show with Crystal Wells, giving listeners a closer look at the artist behind the music.

You can hear the interview here:

Wells described Johnson as “as genuine as they come,” highlighting both his authenticity and down-to-earth personality while discussing his growing music career. Listeners also heard Johnson’s song “Back,” and he treated the audience to a live in-studio performance.

A native of Guthrie, Kentucky, Johnson blends traditional country storytelling with modern influences, earning attention for a sound reminiscent of country greats such as Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, and Waylon Jennings. His gravel-toned vocals and Southern storytelling style are rooted in authenticity, while artists ranging from Cash to Luke Combs have helped shape his musical direction.

Speaking about his connection with audiences, Johnson said he hopes listeners walk away from his music with emotions and stories they can personally relate to.

“When people listen to my music, I hope they can take away a feeling that makes them connect to the song the way that I do,” Johnson said. “I want them to take away a story that they can relate to an experience they have had or will have in their life.”

Johnson also said one of the things he enjoys most about performing is seeing how audiences emotionally connect to his songs.

His musical journey began at a young age after a friend inspired him to learn guitar. While away at 4-H camp one summer, his parents purchased him his first guitar as a surprise — a moment that became a turning point in his life.

Johnson, who grew up watching his mother sing in church, quickly learned to play and later taught himself to sing. Over time, he joined a performing arts program before making the transition into solo performances. Friends and family soon began encouraging him to bring his guitar wherever he went, and performances around campfires, church gatherings, and small gatherings helped define the kind of artist he wanted to become.

Wells shared during the interview that what stood out most to her was how grounded Johnson remains despite his growing success. She noted that Johnson emphasized music has never been about image or fame, but rather telling real stories people can connect with.

Local fans will have an opportunity to see Johnson perform live this weekend. He is scheduled to appear Saturday night at Centre Gridiron from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.
