Anniston Entrepreneurs Awarded $20,000 To Expand Downtown Businesses

Main Street Anniston, in partnership with Main Street America, Main Street Alabama, and the Small Business Development Center at Jacksonville State University, proudly announced the winners of its recent Pitch Competition, awarding a total of $20,000 to support the growth of local businesses in downtown Anniston.
Seven local entrepreneurs competed for the prestigious $10,000 Bright Ideas Grant, sponsored by Main Street Alabama and SparkAL, aimed at expanding business operations within the Main Street Anniston district. Andrew Koehler, owner of The Kress Grand Ballroom, secured the grant with his innovative proposal to transform his historic event venue into a Vintage Fair and Antique Market. His vision includes restoring the iconic Kress lunch counter and installing 26 booths for vintage and antique vendors, revitalizing retail opportunities and increasing foot traffic in downtown Anniston.
In addition to the Bright Ideas competition, seven graduates of the GETUP Anniston program pitched their concepts to bring new storefronts to the Main Street district. Created by Main Street Anniston, the City of Anniston, and local professionals, GETUP Anniston is a comprehensive three-month program that equips aspiring entrepreneurs with essential business knowledge and skills.
Charles Whitfield, owner of Chef Whit’z, was awarded $10,000 in seed funding to transition his popular home-based kettle corn business into a vibrant downtown storefront. Renowned for its sweet and savory popcorn flavors, Chef Whit’z aims to fill the district with irresistible aromas and provide a unique culinary experience that energizes the area.
“This event highlights the incredible entrepreneurial spirit thriving in Anniston and reflects our community’s dedication to supporting small business growth,” said Main Street Anniston Executive Director, Karla Eden. “By investing in these innovative ideas, we are fostering a stronger, more vibrant downtown that benefits everyone.”
This successful event is a testament to the power of collaboration and community-driven growth, showcasing how Anniston is paving the way for local businesses to thrive!
