CEDAR BLUFF– Town of Cedar Bluff officials joined family, friends, and community members Saturday, Aug. 8, to unveil Jessie’s Lane in honor of the late Jessie Wheeler Clifton.

The road, previously known as Harris Street, now recognizes Clifton’s lifelong devotion to faith, family, and community.

The unveiling led into a community block party featuring food, music, fellowship, and activities celebrating Clifton’s life and legacy.

Born July 14, 1925, Clifton was a devoted wife and mother of 11. She worked for many years in the textile industry and remained a faithful member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church for more than 55 years.

Clifton also served her community through numerous civic organizations. She helped residents register to vote, provided transportation to people in need, and assisted local families whenever possible.

WEIS previously reported that the Cedar Bluff Town Council approved Resolution 2026-06 in July to rename the former Harris Street in Clifton’s honor.

During that meeting, Clifton’s daughter, Councilwoman Loretta Higgins, described her mother’s extensive record of service. Clifton volunteered as a hospital Pink Lady, assisted at a nursing home, worked with the Red Cross, and served on community committees.

The family expressed special appreciation to Dr. Connie Geimer for envisioning the tribute. Family members also thanked Mayor Bill Warren and the Cedar Bluff Town Council for adopting the resolution that made it possible.

Jessie’s Lane now stands as a permanent tribute to a community matriarch whose example of faith, compassion, and service continues to inspire future generations.
