Shortly after 9:00am Wednesday an emergency call came in to Chattooga County, Georgia 9-1-1 reporting that a vehicle had veered off of the road, and had became trapped, near the intersection of Highway 27, and Silver Hill Road.
The initial dispatch had alerted multiple first responder units, including Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office – along with both the Gore and Subligna Fire Departments and Floyd County Emergency Medical Services. The thick foliage and steep, rugged terrain made it very difficult to locate the stranded vehicle.
It wasn’t until Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Shrader arrived – that they utilized the GPS coordinates, provided by the 9-1-1 dispatcher – who had been able to ping that caller’s cell phone, that the vehicle in question was finally spotted. The vehicle was precariously positioned and threatening to flip completely over into the nearby creek with the trapped victim still inside.
Recognizing the urgent need for stabilization – Sheriff Shrader called for specialized equipment to secure that vehicle. Then firefighters deployed winch systems – on both Squad 8 and Squad 31 to brace that car and also prevent it from tumbling over. Afterwards, with the vehicle stabilized – the victim was safely extricated – and taken for treatment, by the waiting Floyd Atrium EMS team.
Further investigation revealed that the victim MAY have been trapped in the vehicle since slightly before 4:00 that morning.
The accident is under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol.
