DRUG TRAFFICKER SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON

District Attorney Summer McWhorter Summerford announced today that Grover Wayne Carter was sentenced to a term of LIFE in prison for Trafficking in Methamphetamine.

On June 17, 202, officer Austin Peppers with the Fyffe Police Department executed a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Carter. While approaching the vehicle, Officer Peppers observed Carter throw something out of his window. When asked about what he threw, Carter engaged his vehicle and sped away. Officer Peppers pursued the vehicle and was soon joined by Sergeant Nathanial Bates of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, as well as other deputies.

Eventually, Carter stopped the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot, but was soon apprehended by law enforcement. The item Carter threw from the vehicle was recovered and was discovered to be a trafficking weight of methamphetamine.

Carter appeared for the purpose of a jury trial on August 7, 2023 and entered a guilty plea to the offense of Trafficking in Methamphetamine before a jury was empaneled.  At the time of entering his guilty plea, he was sentenced by Circuit Judge Jeremy Taylor to a term of LIFE in prison and fined $50,000.

Summerford stated, “We could not have had this outcome without the hard work and cooperation of our law enforcement partners.  Officers put their own safety on the line everyday to protect the community and do all they can to remove the drugs that plague so many families around us.”  The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Dennis Thompson.
