Cherokee County Commission Meeting: COVID Numbers Down; New Job Postings; Preparing for Possibility of Severe Weather

Cherokee County EMA Director Shawn Rogers says COVID cases are dropping rapidly on a local level – with the total number of active cases decreasing from around 500 to under a hundred over the last couple of weeks.

Rogers gave that update during the planning session of this week’s Cherokee County Commission meeting.  He also stressed that active cases within the school system are now at a very low level – hopefully trends that’ll continue for the foreseeable future – and he urged everyone to still adhere to proper safety rules and precautions to avoid contracting COVID.  County Engineer also addressed the possibility of severe weather in the county on Thursday of this week, stating that crews were already preparing, in case they were called into action – with vehicles being serviced, chainsaws and other equipment being loaded ahead of time – with several of Highway Department trucks being strategically placed around the county in advance of the storm front.

During the regular meeting, the Commissioners voted to approve annual agreements with Southern Software, inc. for system support; they declared two vehicles, a pair of 2011 model Mack Dump Trucks from the Highway Department, as surplus; approved job postings for three HMT-1 positions at the County Highway Department; and they approved the hiring of Ciara Beatenbo as part-time library assistant at the Cherokee County Public Library.

The next meeting of the Cherokee County Commission will be held Monday, February 28th beginning at 5:00pm in the County Administration Building – on the Cedar Bluff Road in Centre.
