Ida Weakens to a Tropical Storm as of Monday Morning; North Alabama Could Still See Severe Weather

Ida weakened to a tropical storm as of Monday morning but will still bring the threat of flooding, tornadoes and gusty winds to all of Alabama today going into Tuesday.  As of 7:00am the center of Tropical Storm Ida was located 65 miles south/southwest of Jackson, Mississippi, and was moving north at 8 mph.  Ida, which made its final landfall in Louisiana at around 2:00pm on Sunday, is now a minimal tropical storm with winds around 45 mph.

Rain from Ida is expected to makes its way into north Alabama early this afternoon – with the heaviest rain possibly reaching the area by this evening.  A flash flood watch has been expanded to include all of north Alabama.

Forecasters will also be watching for tornadoes that could spin up in rain bands from late today into Tuesday afternoon.  Winds will also be gusty at times with winds of 15-20 mph possible from tonight into Tuesday afternoon.  Gusts could reach up to 30 mph.  North Alabama could experience between two and four inches of rainfall – with areas possibly seeing up to six inches.
